Operator Sign-Off Case Study

Sep 2025

AJS Profiles cuts and grinds steel plate to order at its works in Smethwick, in the West Midlands. Its workers already updated job progress by scanning a QR code with their phones, and the office asked for that scan to record who had done the work as well.

The Business Problem

Once the QR code tracking was in place, the office could see that a job had been cut or ground, but not who had done it. If a customer had a question about a part, or a job needed checking, someone had to work out from rotas and memory which operator had been on that machine. AJS wanted the operator's name to appear on the job's order details, with separate entries for cutting and grinding.

The Solution

Every worker already signed in with their own login before updating a job, so the information was there to be captured. wildesoft.net extended the update so that when an operator marks the cutting stage as complete, their name is written to a new cutting operator field on the job's order details. Grinding works the same way, with its own grinding operator field. The office sees both names on the order details screen they already use, with nothing extra for the worker to type.

The Result

Every cut and ground job now carries the name of the operator who did it. Questions about a job go straight to the right person, and the record builds up automatically as part of the scan the workers were already doing.
