Secure Shop Floor Access Case Study
AJS Profiles is a steel profiling and grinding company in Smethwick, in the West Midlands. When its workers began updating jobs from their phones, the production database needed to be reachable from the shop floor without being opened up to the outside world.
The Business Problem
The production database held the details of every customer and job, and until then it had only been used on the office computers. Letting phones update it meant creating a way in, and that way in had to be secure, reliable and easy to look after. A small team could not afford a system that failed quietly or that needed a specialist every time it was updated.
The Solution
wildesoft.net built the shop floor app in two parts on modern .NET. The phone-friendly website is what the workers see. Behind it sits a separate service that is the only thing allowed to talk to the production database, and every request to that service must carry a secure access token.
Each worker has their own login, which also sets their usual production stage, so the app can offer the right choice first. Lists that rarely change, such as the production stages, are held in memory so pages load quickly.
To keep it dependable, the service writes a log of what it does and any errors it meets, and it has a health check that shows at a glance whether it is running and can reach the database. A one-step deployment script makes releasing an update routine.
The Result
AJS's workers can update jobs from anywhere on site while the production database stays protected behind a single, secured service. Problems can be spotted and diagnosed quickly, and updates can be released without fuss.
