Total Indicative Impact Case Study
Buyers want to know more than where their suppliers are. They also want a sense of what their spending creates. The Total Indicative Impact box in Deprivation Lens turns a supplier list into indicative jobs and wealth, for the whole UK and for the most deprived areas.
The Business Problem
Impact Measurement's earlier system had a Total Impact box, but there was no record of where its two key rates came from: the jobs supported per £1 million spent, and the wealth created per pound. One was close to an official figure, but the other couldn't be traced to any published source. A figure that buyers may quote in their social value reports needs to stand up to questions.
The Solution
wildesoft.net rebuilt the box in Deprivation Lens and worked back from the original's own numbers to find the rates it used. Because the supplier lists are a construction company's spending, the new box uses the current ONS figures for construction: 5.35 jobs per £1 million from ONS's 2023 employment multipliers, and £0.84 of value added per £1 from ONS's 2023 input-output tables.
The box shows the total spend, how much of it goes to suppliers in the most deprived 20% of wards, and the indicative jobs and wealth for each. It does this for the whole list and for the area on screen, side by side. Each rate's source is shown under the figures, and the rates are kept in the settings, so they can be updated when ONS publishes new tables without changing the code.
The Result
The impact figures now rest on named, current official sources that anyone can check, and they're clearly labelled as indicative. A buyer can see both the national picture and the effect of their spending in a single district, in the same box.
