SIM Swaps Case Study

Dec 2020

Mint is a business technology and telecoms provider in the West Midlands, supplying business mobiles and SIMs. wildesoft.net built the portal where Mint's business customers manage their SIMs, and then let them carry out SIM swaps themselves.

The Business Problem

A SIM swap moves a mobile number onto a new SIM card, for example when a card is damaged, lost or the wrong size for a new phone. Customers had to ask Mint to do it for them, and the user was left without a working phone until someone at Mint got to the request.

Swaps also needed care. The new card must be one the customer actually holds and hasn't used yet, and the same number can't be swapped over and over while the network is still processing the last change.

The Solution

wildesoft.net added a SIM swap option to each active SIM in the customer's portal. Choosing it opens a short window showing the number being moved and a list of the customer's spare, unused SIM cards. The customer picks one and confirms, and the request goes straight to Mint's SIM management platform. If the customer has no spare cards, the portal tells them to contact Mint instead.

While the swap is under way, the SIM shows as "Swapping" with the time it was requested, and the swap and bar buttons are hidden for that number. A cool-down period then stops the same number being swapped again too soon, and the portal explains that a swap normally takes up to two hours and can only be done once a day per number. If the platform turns a request down, the customer sees the reason straight away.

The Result

Customers can get a user back up and running on a new SIM without waiting for Mint, and the safeguards stop duplicate or premature requests reaching the network.
