Silage SNS Correction Case Study

Nutricalc calculates a Soil Nitrogen Supply (SNS) figure for every field. It is the starting point for every nitrogen recommendation CXCS gives its farming clients.

The Business Problem

For silage fields, the SNS figure was being worked out from the wrong measure of the previous year's manure. It used the "available" nitrogen rather than the "total" nitrogen applied from organic sources. That meant fields that had received less organic manure were not being moved into a lower SNS band when they should have been.

The result was nitrogen recommendations that didn't match the industry rules. CXCS advisers had raised it as an urgent issue because it affected the advice going out to farmers.

The Solution

wildesoft.net corrected the silage calculation so that it now uses the total nitrogen from the previous year's manure. The SNS band now drops as the rules require when organic nitrogen falls below the set threshold. The fix was checked on staging against real examples supplied by CXCS before it went live.

The Result

The correction was one of four urgent calculation fixes delivered for CXCS in 2026. Silage recommendations are now calculated correctly and consistently, in line with the guidance CXCS advisers work to. Farmers get advice they can trust, and advisers no longer have to second-guess the figures or correct them by hand.
