Staging and Version Control Case Study

The Business Problem

There was no separate environment for testing changes. New features and fixes went more or less straight into the system advisers were using to produce farmers' plans. And because the software was installed on individual machines, there was no guarantee everyone was running the latest version. An adviser could be using an out-of-date copy without knowing it.

The Solution

wildesoft.net built a dedicated staging server, one of two staging environments it added for CXCS in 2026. CXCS now tests and signs off every change before release, and the application is clearly coloured orange when running in staging mode, so nobody confuses it with the live system. Nutricalc now also checks its own version and warns advisers if their machine has not been updated.

The Result

Changes reach advisers only after CXCS has approved them, and everyone works on the same, current version. Urgent fixes can be delivered quickly and with confidence, and the risk of an old copy producing inconsistent plans has gone.
