LM3 Case Study

LM3, short for Local Multiplier 3, is a proven way for an organisation to measure its local economic impact: how much of the money it spends stays in its local community. LM3 Online, from Impact Measurement Ltd, has been used by organisations including Morgan Sindall, Wellcome, Kier, the University of Parma, EDF and Strength2Food. Since August 2025 wildesoft.net has built LM3 Version 6, now running as the LM3 Hub.

The Business Problem

The LM3 method had been refined over years in a master spreadsheet, and the previous online version was built on older technology that was hard to extend. Organisations wanted to use LM3 wherever they worked, not only where local boundaries were already set, to see the difference local suppliers made, and to collect real figures from their suppliers rather than relying on estimates. Large customers also needed their divisions and regions to run projects side by side.

The Solution

wildesoft.net rebuilt LM3 from the ground up on the latest .NET platform, with the website and a set of focused background services. The new LM3 calculator chooses the right model for each project's data and matches the master spreadsheet to within half a percent on real projects. A mapping system lets any organisation draw its local area, as a circle, a set of regions or a wider regional area, and see every supplier on the map.

Supplier lists are uploaded from a spreadsheet, addresses are looked up automatically, and an indicative LM3 appears straight away. Suppliers receive their own login by email, campaigns are tracked through SendGrid, and a confidence panel shows when enough suppliers have responded. A project dashboard ties it together, and organisation administrators control logins, divisions and regions for their own teams.

The Result

LM3 can now be used by any organisation, anywhere, that knows who its suppliers are and how much it paid them. Results arrive quickly, become more accurate as suppliers respond, and match the established method. With 400+ code changes delivered in its first year, the platform is ready for new LM3 products to be built on it.
