Ingredient Spotlight and Scope Emissions Case Study

Meal Analyser, from Impact Measurement Ltd, gives caterers a carbon and health analysis of the dishes they serve. Experienced users wanted to go further than a single figure per dish and understand where the emissions really come from.

The Business Problem

Not all ingredients are produced the same way. Beef, tomatoes or rice can have very different carbon footprints depending on how and where they are farmed, but a standard database gives one representative value. Organisations reporting on their carbon also need to know how a dish's emissions sit within the three greenhouse gas "scopes" used in corporate reporting.

The Solution

wildesoft.net added two deeper analyses to each dish. Ingredient Spotlight lets users choose any ingredient in their recipe and explore how different production methods change its emissions. Elsewhere in the tool AI is limited to the Agribalyse database, for consistency, but here it is deliberately allowed to look more widely so that more production methods are covered. Every source is referenced on the page, with a clear note that these figures should be treated with care.

Scope Emissions breaks the dish's impact into the three scopes: direct emissions from the kitchen, emissions from purchased energy, and the wider value chain, including food production, transport and waste. Each analysis is shown as a chart and can be downloaded as part of the dish report, and users can delete and re-run any analysis.

The Result

Caterers can now see which ingredients matter most, how sourcing choices could change them, and how their dishes fit into scope-based carbon reporting. The tool supports both quick answers and in-depth investigation.
