Nutrition and Energy Case Study

Meal Analyser, from Impact Measurement Ltd, sets out to show three things about a dish: its carbon, nutrition and calorific impact. For schools and hospitals in particular, a lower-carbon menu is only a success if it still feeds people well.

The Business Problem

The first version of the tool measured carbon. Caterers wanted to see health alongside it, so that reducing emissions did not come at the expense of nutrition. They needed the energy and nutritional content of a real serving, not a theoretical one, presented clearly enough to compare dishes and share with others.

The Solution

wildesoft.net added a Nutrition and Energy analysis to every dish. It uses McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset, the standard UK reference for food composition, as its primary source. Results are calculated for a single serving, using the portion size the caterer has already given in the servings stage, so the figures match what is actually put on the plate.

The breakdown appears as a colour-coded table and chart, so the key values stand out. The tool explains where caution is needed, for example when an ingredient is too loosely described to give a precise figure, so users understand how far to rely on each result. Nutrition sits on the dish results page and in its downloadable report, next to the carbon figures.

The Result

Caterers can now see the carbon and the nutritional value of a dish side by side, for a real serving. Menu changes that help the climate can be checked to make sure they still deliver for the people eating them.
